I LOVE CHRISTMAS!! (That is probably the biggest understatement of the year, ha!) As all my friends and family will know Christmas is and always will be my favourite time of year. I love the bright Christmas lights, trees in windows, the cheesy films, the even cheesier Christmas music (Marcus is very unappreciative of my Christmas song renditions;)), the food (mince pies are LIFE) and the fact that everyone is that little bit nicer and happier with each other.
Christmas is a MAJOR deal in my family. You could call us Christmas mad aha! But for me Christmas is always about spending time with the family and enjoying ourselves together, the emphasis on together!! With that I am going to share some of my favourite traditions my family and I have.
My favourite Christmas decoration, ever since I can remember, is the Christmas tree. I find them beautiful with their unique decorations (every family has their own little collections) and so incredibly festive. They make me smile when I see them sat in peoples windows. Me and my dad have a little tradition, which we still do even though I have moved out, is we pick the tree out together. We always get a real one from the local farm shop. We tend to end up picking one out that is too tall or big and mum will moan at us aha! It is one of my favourite traditions because I get to spend some time with dad, which is so lovely because we both live such busy lives. Christmas is all about spending time with your loved ones any way, isn’t it?
On the topic of spending time with my dad around Christmas is that Christmas is one of the rare occasions where I can actually drag my dad out shopping (shopping isn’t his most loved hobby..). Every year we go out for brunch and I help him buy Mum’s Christmas present. It always a laugh and fun. It is also how we found the restaurant ‘Here’ in Berko, 100% recommend it! Mum and I always go Christmas every year. It makes me feel so festive. We go to MK each year. We get cake and tea. Shop around. Have a little mooch. We love a good shop and even more so at Christmas time.
Mum and I love watching the really cheesy dodgey Christmas films. They are so easy to watch and just get you all festive (cliche I know!) My family always watch Miracle on 34th Street every year after we have decorated the house. A little one but means a lot for us all to be sat together.
This year is going to be a big Christmas in the Herlihy household. My brothers, myself and our partners are all back Christmas Eve at my parents for the whole of Christmas (it feels like we are little kids again)! My Nanny and Grandad, my aunt and uncle and my cousin and her husband are all there too for Christmas day. Oh and don’t forget Fudge and Obi will be there too;) (and Scrum my brother’s puppy)! Family means everything to me and even more so at Christmas. It will be utter chaos in our house for sure.
In our busy lives we don’t always get time to share our love for one another and appreciate each other as much as we would like to do so. Christmas, a time for giving, gives us that opportunity to slow down and spend time with those we love. To laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Enjoying every festive moment with friends and family.
Till next time…
